Mauriello Law Firm Obtains $8 Million Writ of Attachment for New York Sugar Company

Following the application filed by the Mauriello Law Firm, a California Federal Court recently issued a writ of attachment in order to secure the amount of $8,362,187 on behalf of a New York sugar company.

The writ of attachment was obtained on August 21, 2012 in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on behalf Sweeteners Plus, Inc. (“Sweeteners”). Sweeteners provides a full range of sugars and sweeteners for small and large customers across the United States in many industries, including food and beverage manufacturers, sugar refineries, pharmaceuticals and other non-food applications. Sweeteners’ lawsuit was filed after Sweeteners was defrauded of $7,216,694.00 that it paid for a shipment of Brazilian sugar that never existed and was never shipped. Sweeteners’ funds were released by the designated “paymaster” without proper authorization, the sugar that Sweeteners contracted for was never shipped, and Sweeteners’ funds were never returned. The trail of funds paid led directly to a Palm Desert, California property purchased with cash by defendants Tatiana Navarro and Gilbert Freire. The writ of attachment was issued against that property.

The writ of attachment was issued pursuant to a right to attach order issued by Magistrate Judge Marc Goldman by the Clerk of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The litigation is ongoing against all defendants, including Navarro and Freire.
