Attorney Thomas Mauriello moderated an expert panel at the 2022 Midyear Meeting of the Public Investor Advocate Bar Association (“PIABA”), a nationwide bar association of attorneys who represent investors in disputes with the securities industry. The panel focused on recovering damages for emotional, psychological and other “non-economic” damages in financial elder abuse cases. The speakers included renowned San Diego financial elder abuse and consumer rights attorney Frank J. Fox, Esq. of Majors & Fox, as well as Dr. Stacey Wood, PhD, ABPP, the Molly Mason Jones Professor of Psychology at Scripps College in Claremont, CA, whose research has examined factors that increase susceptibility in fraud victims, tactics commonly employed by scammers, and psychological effects on elderly victims. While most lawyers understand the economic damages that can flow from financial fraud and similar wrongdoing, this session provided valuable insights for practitioners as to how to understand and present emotional distress and other non-economic damages on behalf of their senior citizen clients.
